Overview

The full picture.

Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) sits in a natural glacier bowl β€” a 360Β° amphitheatre of Himalayan peaks that trekkers call 'the sanctuary'. Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna I, and Gangapurna surround you completely.

The trail climbs through Gurung and Magar villages, bamboo and rhododendron forest, and the steep walls of the Modi Khola gorge before opening dramatically into the sanctuary. The transition from forest to glacier world in a single afternoon is genuinely unforgettable.

At a max altitude of 4,130m, this is one of Nepal's most accessible high-altitude treks β€” no acclimatisation rest days required, suitable for trekkers with reasonable fitness and no high-altitude experience.

Highlights

What you'll experience.

01
The Annapurna SanctuaryA natural glacial bowl entirely encircled by 7,000m+ peaks. The silence, scale, and light in the sanctuary are extraordinary β€” unlike anywhere else on Earth.
02
Machhapuchhre (Fishtail)The sacred 'Fishtail Peak' (6,993m) dominates the trail for days. It has never been summited and remains Nepal's most spiritually significant unclimbed mountain.
03
Chhomrong VillagePerched on a spectacular ridgeline at 2,170m, the Gurung village of Chhomrong has the finest viewpoint on the lower trail and excellent teahouses.
04
Sunrise at Base CampWake before dawn in the sanctuary. Watch alpenglow paint Annapurna South and Hiunchuli gold and pink. This is why people come.
05
Modi Khola GorgeThe narrow gorge carved by the Modi river β€” one of Nepal's most dramatic natural features, with near-vertical 3,000m walls on either side.
06
Rhododendron SeasonIn spring, the trail from Chhomrong to the sanctuary passes through Nepal's finest rhododendron forest β€” a tunnel of crimson and white blossoms.
